Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement and its components (anatomical, physiological, neurological, biochemical, biomechanical, neuromotor, psychological) in interaction with the environment. In simpler terms, it is also called Human Kinetics or the scientific study of human movement. The term actually comes from the Greek word "kinesis" which means "to move".
A Kinesiologist is a University-educated health professional which applies exercise and movement science to promote health and wellbeing; prevent, manage, and rehabilitate injuries; treat illness and chronic disease; restore function, and optimize human performance in an individual's life. They are Human Movement Specialists which are specifically trained in helping you move well, be well! With many Kinesiologists, their initial Bachelor's Degree they receive is just the basis for further training, specializations, and advancements.
Seeing a Kinesiologist, you will work one-on-one with someone which is a Human Movement Specialist that understands how the body moves as a whole and more specifically with injuries, chronic conditions, traumas like whiplash or concussions, and complex cases like surgeries and musculoskeletal conditions. This is very beneficial in getting the specific care suited to your needs and lifestyle.
In a Kinesiology assessment, they will analyse and assess the way you move, looking at imbalances, strengths and weaknesses, movement patterns, posture, and functional capabilities. Through their assessment, they will create an individualized exercise program to work on found imbalances and other things hindering your movement. Working one-on-one with a Kinesiologist, you are able to move and learn specifically about your body in a safe, encouraging environment with someone who knows exactly how your body moves.
Kinesiologists provide an important piece of the puzzle to the health care system and are an important provider in our communities.
Practicing Kinesiologists are members of the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK). This association is the united voice for the profession here in British Columbia, Canada. Each province in Canada has their own professional association which are excellent resources if you are looking into the career path, want to learn more about Kinesiology, and if you want to find a Kinesiologist near you.
On a national level, The Canadian Kinesiology Alliance (CKA) represents ten provincial Kinesiology associations that are member associations and over 4,200 Affiliated Kinesiologists across the country. This is a great resource to learn more about the structure of Kinesiology across Canada, more information as a aspiring student, and also, if you are looking for an Affiliated Kinesiologist.
If you are interested in working with a Kinesiologist or have questions about Kinesiology, we have three full-time Kinesiologists on staff that would be happy to help you out! Whether you are a student wanting to learn more, or a potential client with a specific question about your injuries or how you can move better, please give us a call and we would love the opportunity to see how we can help you move well, be well.
